Yes, 350 million years is a mind-buggeringly long time. I too live in the mountains & also find it comforting to gaze at the strata & reflect on the ultimate insignificance of our affairs.
And yes, the changing seasons at our latitudes beat the hell out of the monotony of tropical climate. Still, a childhood-full of Canadian winters leaves me wistful at the passing of summer. It's certainly no coincidence that Russians, Finns & other Nordics hit the bottle so hard. It's the dark cold winters.
