There is pleasure in hearing the stories again anyway. I like to hear my friends tell the same stories.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for creating this kind of community! I've been meaning to add myself to the facilmap and tried to do so now that you've brought it up again. However, that wasn't as straightforward as it could have been. TL;DR: the link you posted in the description of this episode doesn't allow people to add their own markers. If you change that to https://facilmap.org/tspeaking.edit , people will be able to add themselves to the map simply by following the link :)

The general idea is that there are 3 URLs for every instance of a facilmap, one for reading-only, one for editing markers, and one for admin access (see their documentation here: https://docs.facilmap.org/users/collaborative/#urls). If you share any of these links with someone, that person will then have that kind of access, so you really want to make sure that no one gets the admin URL who's not supposed to have it - and I'm happy to tell you the most obvious variants for the admin URL don't work, so good job on keeping that safe! For the description above, you've decided to share the read-only link, facilmap.org/tspeaking, while people need the edit-link in order to add themselves to the map. Luckily, I still had that saved somewhere as facilmap.org/tspeaking.edit , so this allowed me to add myself and maybe help others do the same :)

Hope this helps, all the best from beautiful Vienna, Austria :)

Hey Chris.

On April 19th, I set out on a long drive towards a town on the precipice of the High Country in Victoria, Australia, to take part in an 8-days long Bushcraft Survival course.

I checked for a new podcast from you as I left. And then again about 3 hours into the drive, and to my delight, this had literally just been posted.

We just like listening to ya, mate.

I think we are all united around a common theme of life as a journey, and of not being sucked into the hole of living without questioning. We are some who wish to, at least partially, examine what we are doing with our one life, and give it a good crack. That's how it seems to me, anyway. I think you have lived a very Daoist life in the sense that you have not gotten in your own way. It could just seem that way from the outside, but it seems to me that you have set about doing what you felt you ought to, and done it, slowly and properly. This is hard for a lot of people, and indeed, a lot of my 20's were spent very much "in my own way" or in my own head, instead of in my own life.

I think the story of your experience with Sex at Dawn, as a series of episodes, would be awesome.

It's funny, because I definitely do feel a connection with you after having listened for some 8+ years now - and essentially feel like we may as well have met.

P.S the Bushcraft course was incredible.

All the best.

Yo chris!

I think a lot of us feel similarly to you about how the in person podcasts are more enjoyable. Maybe you could have a bunch of people who live in Crestone on the podcast. We don’t care if they’re famous or not. I’m sure there’s a lot of interesting people who live there. I know a couple people there too if you’re looking for new people.

Take care!

Hey Chris

I’m a long time listener, first time commenter.

I listened to this episode and I just wanted to say a few things in response to some of your questions.

1) “Why am I listening to your podcast when there are so many others out there?” Because I appreciate how open, honest, and humble you are. I appreciate how self-deprecating and introspective you are. And I appreciate how totally devoid of bullshit you are.

2) I like to hear/see/ read both a directors cut on Sex at Dawn. And I’d like to hear a series on your thoughts on fame, especially in regards to what you found to be the unforeseen downsides of fame.

3) I heard you talk years ago about your idea about interviewing dying people and as someone who has made a full-length documentary, I seriously considered stealing your idea. But I decided not to (for now anyway) because I feel the experience might be a bit too confronting for me to handle. However, the title I thought of was: “Confessions of the dead”

Your a straight up legend Chris!

And I appreciate all that you do!

Keep up the good work.

Much love from a fan in the land down under

To give my perspective on your question of "why do people listen to the podcast?", I think the core of my reason is I appreciate your perspective on things. I even enjoy you talking about why you don't know why people listen to the podcasts. I love the ROMAs and in-person conversations the best. I especially like when you speak about social taboos and criticize emerging mainstream ideologies. Pretty much, I enjoy hearing you speak on whatever, because I appreciate your perspective.

I would definitely listen to your recounting of the SaD near-fame time period as well.

As far as comparing to other podcasts, I enjoy the low-production authenticity of yours. Hyper-produced podcasts, even with interesting content, can seem soulless, or at the very least annoying. It's the same turn off I get when I hear hyper-produced, pitch-corrected songs. You mentioned John Frusciante recently in your podcast, and he accidentally didn't have his guitar properly tuned when recording Scar Tissue. Imperfections add character.

Good luck getting all the projects buttoned up at your home.

PS I think you had mentioned trying to get Rolf Potts on the podcast a while ago. I would love to hear the chemistry between you two.

Do you think you would have fun helping creative people find their voice? What happened with the plan of giving one time life advice for 500 bucks? I might soon have 500$ spare bucks and was evaluating if I should use it for that. Also I remember you mentioning the possibility of leading a writing class or something. Would that nourish your soul?

I took that down because I ended up feeling conflicted about charging so much money to talk with people I ended up feeling close to. So it felt like charging my friends! I do think that leading some kind of writing workshop could be fun and inspiring. Once I get things more or less under control here, I'll think about doing something like that.

The writing workshop would be so cool! Or any form of creative mentoring! I bet it would feel really meaningful and would make you feel hopeful about the future. Btw good to know that the 500$ are not an option bc I was so conflicted between using them for traveling or for that! I’ll travel with you in my ears!

Meh, don't read the comments. You the man.

Like some of the comments below I am also a long time listener.

Firstly a big THANKS for all the thought provoking and interesting chats you have shared over the years. The messages of some of them live in my subconscious and memory as if I actually know you, or the guests, which is quite weird really. ha

I distinctly remember a couple of interesting times listening, the one time I was in Goa riding around on a rented Enfield (as you do out there) and it was just as you released the episode on your friend that you hung out with there and reminisced about your time together there. So that was quite weird timing roaming around your old memories as I listened to the podcast. Also I remember being on a bus coming down from the hills around Medellin when you had Wade Davis on and you both ended up on the topic of Colombia as I looked out of the rickety bus window across the view of Medellin as if I was in the Narcos intro titles. haha. Have also done the ride to Pai you described in Thailand too.

Some of my fav TG podcasts are the ones you have done with people that crossed your path, like your friend in Goa. The types of people that are unique to your path and the type of people that would never normally get the mic. I hope you don't lose the impulse to capture those voices.

Sounds trite, but just do you,

where ever you are at in life and who ever is crossing your path.

Thats how we all ended up here in the first place.

I like this quote from Bhagavad Gita when my work has me in knots:

“Let your concern (or focus) be on your action, let it not be on the outcome of the action. Do not act only out of expectation of a result, but then do not slip into inactivity.”

Yo Chris! Been listening since forever. Even got you in my mom’s pod rotation. I don’t listen to hear an expert drone on. I listen because I like the way you think, man! Your perspective is fresh and you have some of the most unique guests of anyone out there. No way you could be replaced. I love the same old stories. I don’t care how many times you talk about your family rescuing the wrong golden retriever; I’m chuckling every time. All my uncles tell the same stories all the time anyway, so it fits.

He is risen, but he has minimal ego :P.

Why do I listen to your podcast? Why is your podcats the only one out of all of them in the world I have listened to all the episodes and make time in my day to listen to any new episodes?

Because your view on the world seems unique. The thoughts you have spark some thoughts of my own. I like the way your stories, however many times you tell them, spark my imagination or joy for life, your view on a situation, your general thoughts you share impact me and I beleive make my life a bit better. You can put a smile on my face when I am down, you can help me answer a question in my head without you even knowing it. I'd pay you $5 a month for a few episodes a year, as long as it is your episode and not what you think the listeners want. If you don't want to do video call interviews then don't. If you want to explore talking to people on their death bed go for it. Not chasing the ego stuff, not pushing to get on rogan and massively push your stuff is something that keeps me coming back.

I am one of the people who have been listening for I guess close to a decade now. I'm here for you and your thoughts, the people you attract and are attracted to you. The podcast with you and your mechanic talking about his adventures on a motorbike I will never forget. Just do what you feel is right, embrace a small part of your ego and go with your idea. If enough people don't like it I am sure the emails and txt messages will let you know haha.

Keep on keeping on and remember we are all gonna die one day.

Hi Chris, thank you for this podcast. We all love you and appreciate your work.

Have you ever considered having Louise Perry, author of The Case Against the Sexual Revolution, on the podcast?

Could you please discuss why it is that you and Duncan Trussell had a falling out?

I've considered it, but she's in the UK, so it would have to be Zoom, and our views on sex are so far apart that I fear we'd have trouble finding common ground. As for Duncan, you'd have to ask him. He ghosted me years ago. I have no idea why.
