Great episode and topic. This whole alternative/modern psychedelia culture shaped my early 20s and I was deep in it. So to see it turn into Mainstream therapy culture has been wild. Great perspectives.
Personally I feel that psychedelics are mental catalysts that boost what's already in there, both on the personal level and the cultural level as well.
Warrior cultures used psychedelics to boost their aggression, like the berzerkers who drank Amanita before going into battle. The Aztec priests ingested mushrooms before ripping the hearts out of sacrificial victims.
So is it any wonder psychedelics are now being perceived by the techbros of Silicon Valley as an "enhancement tool" and an investment opportunity?
Anyway, I liked Adam's thinking, but I just hope his pendulum doesn't swing so hard to the other side he turns into one of those obnoxious hardcore skeptics. There's no better zealot than the disenchanted former convert.
Why is always Javier? 😊 Why not Roberto, Fernando, or even Pedro? I know many Javiers and most of them do not peddle fake healings, seudo crap, and mystical oils, instead are cool dudes with pragmatic, sceptical minds. I think Javiers are underappreciated. Just saying.
Another phenomenal recently released book on psycholdelics is Sacred Knowledge: Psychedelics and Religious Experiences by William A. Richards. The author was an OG of research in the United States and in the revival.
You talk about psychedelics being potentially used for interrogations. That’s how LSD was introduced to the United States. The first time it was experimented with was by the Nazis in concentration camps to see if it could be used as a truth serum. The Americans found out about it when they liberated one of the camps and the first American to take it was a General. Then it landed in the newly created CIA to study for the same purpose where it spread to university labs and psychiatric hospitals and leaked out into mainstream. A Secret History of LSD in the Third Reich with Norman Ohler documents this really well.
Thanks for the ad-free episodes. :-)

Psychedelics = looking through a telescope and seeing the top of the mountain metaphor was great
The ad free episodes do not go unnoticed!! So many good speakers make their platform feel less credible with ads like Esther Perel even. Thanks Chris!
Another goodie! Also just added Voltiare's Candide to the reading list. Whenever someone this smart and clever cites a book, I tend to add it.
Thank you!
Love that book. Was a required read in high school

LOL I bet you were taunted at school endlessly with the "Yo no me llamo Xavier" song from Los Toreros Muertos 😜
I feel your pain, Javier. There are many good Javiers out there in the world, I'm sure.
Great episode! You guys are speaking my language too ☺️
Just got to your rant about ads Chris and was wondering if you watched the new black mirror series… can’t say more to avoid spoilers…
Not yet, but I'm intending to watch it this season. (It got too dark for me when the mechanical dogs were hunting down the innocents.)
