Paleontologist-Futurist Michael Garfield is devoted to helping navigate our age of accelerating weirdness and helping cultivate the curiosity and play we'll need to thrive in it.
Elon musk bought Twitter, aka censorship central, and in doing so created arguably the most public library of modern times. He has also filed to create a university in Texas that would divert from the archaic indoctrination path of the current public school system. But I bet he’s dealing with many road blocks and people trying to shut that down.
Of course everyone has their opinions on how he should spend his money but haters gonna hate no matter what you do.
The talk about random number generation reminded me of the movie: Knowing. I watched it last night for the first time in years. I recommend it and would love to hear your thoughts.
I was so pleasantly surprised with this episode. At first I was rolling my eyes when Michael was talking about AI with such enthusiasm, thinking to myself "ugh not one of those assholes..."
But then he started talking about astrology, psychic phenomena, precognition, Dean Radin, Eric Wargo and even Vallée and I was like "holy shit, he's part of MY tribe!"
Needless to say, I'll now have to check out his podcast.
If anyone ever had trouble understanding why this Podcast is called “Tangentially Speaking,” this episode should clear things up 😂 I will definitely be following Michael’s podcast but you should definitely have him on again, Chris! You two are fascinating to listen to together.
Such an interesting guy. I'm gonna have to listen to this a couple times to dig into each idea. Earth is tripping on humans!? Amazing. Efficiency is negatively correlated with resiliency. Will relisten soon.
I loved this episode, so many different pieces of information I want to dig deeper into. I wanted to say that your metaphor about death and life after death, relating it to a drop of water falling into the ocean, gives me goosebumps honestly. Beautifully said and makes me think of my own mother and her death. Thank you Chris.
My dad turned me on to Bill Thompson's At the Edge of History back in 1971 or 72, when I was 12. It influenced me at a basic level back then, in a way that has always remained a part of me.
Great podcast. Thanks!
Did this edit sound off to anyone else? I'm listening via the substack player and it seems to cut them off before they finish their thoughts.
