thinking about how the transformative power of psychedelics stems from their way of making you believe you{re about to die made me think of the Overview effect experienced by some astronauts.
I used to think that space travel would help bring about a massive consciousness change among the elite who could afford it, but now I'm not that optimist because space travel will only work if you make it as safe as possible, and the feeling of safety then become inversely proportional to their chances of being transformed by the experience.
If the only think you feel you're risking is money instead of your life, then I don't think you can get transformed by the experience, the same way nobody feels the climber's rush just by watching an IMAX documentary about mount Everest.
Didn’t catch the name of the guy that sent in the voice memo at the start. Anyways, one sure sign that you need to join a union is when your boss tells you that we’re like family, you know they’re about to do some dodgy shit.
25 years in my teacher’s union. We helped each other. More family behavior seen by union sisters and brothers supporting each other. We had to teach some members it’s not a service. It requires participation from as many members as possible to be more effective.
Great chat, Hamilton rocks. His own pod is fascinating. I recommend a recent ep with a porn star, I think it's "The Pharmacology of Porn"
Two things I'd like to add to the conversation...
First, and I wonder what Mr Beato might say to this, it's said that the sound of popular eighties music was profoundly affected by cocaine in the studio; that the cocaine high inclined producers toward certain frequencies and tempos.
Second - there was apparently a study of LSD's effect on sociopaths, using "normal" people as a control. Norms found all the classic, hippyish results of greater empathy and deeper connection to the earth, while it was somehow deemed that sociopaths learned more about human empathy, but in a detached way that made them more effective manipulators for the better knowledge of their 'prey'. I heard this on a reputable podcast some ten years ago and have not been able to Goog the study, so... Grains of salt. Nonetheless, anecdotally and from personal experience, it seems clear that psychedelics are not an automatic love injection.
@hamilton how does one go about booking you for an event?
Well there is that scorpion case, thinking you were going to die after being stung (if I remember correctly)

Our district used to use corny condescending language with us educated professionals.

I'm an idiot. 578 episodes and I still forget to delete that track if I decide not to use it. Thanks for the quick heads-up!
