It can be rewarding.

(I realize I failed to indicate it was St Clair County Michigan)

Look forward to the next Pod!

Chris:

It’s nice to have a dialogue with you. Since I was first turned on to you listening to Rogan (which frankly I can’t do anymore) your podcast has been my very favorite for years. You have the magic touch.. keep up the good work. Im the Chief Public Defender in St. Clair County and if you ever get out this way, the IPA’s are on me!

That's noble work you're doing, sir. Defending the defenseless. Honored, and thank you for the kind words.

Chris:

I’m listening to Cam Shayne and when the two of you talk about Sam Harris and your observation that you have an ‘allergic reaction’ to one who is so overtly certain.

This is precisely what I’m talking about when I deal with certain people in my ‘orbit’.

They’re overtly certain that Trump is the finest, most intelligent, tough President we’ve ever had.

That ‘overt certainty’ about something so demonstrably wrong makes it impossible to engage with them.

It’s beautiful in theory to think that you can sit with a person and peel back the layers and try to understand where they’re coming from. But regrettably, they mostly have their heads buried in sand. You can’t change their mind. They can’t change yours-and suddenly you’re allergy kicks in.

I get it. There's no point in pouring your water into a bucket with a hole in the bottom. Some people can't be reached, and their "opinions" are actually religious faith.

Chris:

Your observations about embracing disagreement is fantastic in theory. But when you have a discussion with someone who takes a discussion about the weather and hijacks it into a MAGA discussion. It’s tough!

You can’t reason with these people. The attack on the Capitol.. no big deal to them.

The election.. Trump won as far as they’re concerned.

I guess my point is that if you’re going to have a discussion with someone whose position on any given issue is based on facts..that’s fine. But when the person with whom you disagree insists on arguing about things that aren’t true, it’s virtually impossible.

That's true, but what I try to do (and I'm not always able) is to figure out the subtext of where they're coming from. Why is it important to them to declare that the earth is flat? What emotional need is being expressed by people who insist Covid isn't real? There's no reasoning over the "facts," but it's fascinating to try to figure out what's going on underneath.
