Another example of where you can really observe the agendas around provision of public transport is when you look at a transport map of Berlin. 100 years ago there were trams running round the whole city, but when the Wall went up they got rid of the trams in West Berlin in favour of private car ownership. East Berlin had (and still has) an incredible network of trams connecting all the suburbs, but the western part of the city relies heavily (now) on buses.
