Listen now | I love this guy. He exudes kindness, generosity, and intelligence. This is the fourth time Rick’s been on Tangentially Speaking, but the first time we’ve met in person, so it’s a special conversation. We don’t talk about music as much this time around, but we go deep on family, dads, and how life looks from sixty. (Given the fact that I was flat on my back with COVID less than 48 hours after recording this, that last subject seems prescient in retrospect.)
Rick’s dad must have brought him out into the world to play golf and chat with strangers because he knew they would respect him in some way. It’s funny and fascinating to meet a kid who can hold their own in a situation like that, especially for so much time. It seems like Rick’s dad knew Rick wasn’t understood by the teachers, so he found another way to school his kid.
This was such a great interview - scratch that - a great conversation. This exemplifies what is great about this podcast. I felt like I was right there in the room while Chris and Rick were talking.
Hey Chris, good to hear that you are feeling better. Just finished listening to this episode. One thing that stuck out was the part where Rick was talking about success. Where he talked about how some bands take off and some just don't. I wonder what are the main reasons for that? Do some bands get pushed and marketed better? Or is it a case of "right place, right time"? Because you can probably bet your bottom dollar that there were bands out there that had great songs but never had any mainstream success and we never heard about them. It is almost as if the music industry is a kind of filter where performers get pigeon holed.
You have these kind of "stratas" of success. Obviously objective no doubt :).
Legendary/Immortal/Untouchable - Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bowie, Dylan
Fantastic/Great - Led Zeppelin, Cream, Nirvana, Eagles
Good - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mamas and the Papas
One Hit Wonders - Dexys Midnight Runners
Average/Bad/Not sure how they got popular - Creed, Nickleback
Then there is the rest....amateur musicians, session musos
Then there are the hacks, wannabees, people who can't play music but really enjoy listening to it...
BTW I just finished listening to "Tapestry" by Carole King, after you mentioned it on one of your episodes. Man, what an album!
I love every episode which consists of Chris sitting down and chatting with a friend. That's where to best stuff is for me, over a "expert in their field"-type interview. Just my humble opinion though. Variety is what keeps life spicy, right?
This is one of my favorite episodes of Tangentially Speaking. It’s obvious that there is more to Rick than just being a great musician/producer, and that really came through here. It seems like you guys were destined to become friends.

I'm really happy you two finally had a chance to jam IRL. Maybe next time Rick should pick a guitar and give us a few chords while you chat?
