it's somewhat serendipitous that I happened to listen to this episode on the day the Biden administration announced the cancellation of student debt loans. Yeah I know it's only $10K but the way the GOP and Fox News is raging about it makes me thing old uncle Joe managed to do something good for a change.
I don't know, I guess it's a "I wish I had YOUR problems" kinda feeling from me. Especially because I'm in Mexico and I know *exactly* what's wrong with populism. Our stupid-ass dictator-wannabe president is a poster child of populism, and he (and only he) gets to determine WHO belongs to the "good people" he's willing to defend with his retrograde policies. Drug dealers and criminals that hijack tollbooths get to be part of "the people;" business owners demanding security and parents begging for treatments for their kids who are dying of cancer? Those are the "evil conservatives" and traitors to the people.
When you see a politician sowing division among the citizens of the same nation for political gain, THAT is populism.
Since you've brought up Smartless a couple times, I'd recommend checking out the episode with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, the singer/songwriter and lead guitarist respectively of radiohead. It's a fun conversation in Smartless's familiar way. I haven't heard you ever mention listening to radiohead, so I'm kind of assuming you heard a bit of them in the 90s and it didn't really stick (and these 2 on the show have a recent side-project called the Smile). I selfishly hope Jason Bateman's enthusiasm for Radiohead inspires you to give them a shot, because their work is incredible. It's very wide ranging (some brit rock, electronic, quiet piano, soundtracks..), and I wouldn't expect all or most to appeal to you, but I imagine some would. I would recommend listening to Daydreaming and Suspirium (from yorke's soundtrack of the suspiria remake). Hope you enjoy!
Thanks, Dan. You're right. Radiohead is a band I know a lot of smart people really respect, but what I've heard hasn't stuck with me, as you put it. I'll give it a listen again.
Chrissy, very happy to hear that you will be listening to some Radiohead, though judging by what you normally play im not so sure its your kinda thing. This video of Thom and Jonny performing a stripped back version of 'present tense' is beautiful and if you find yourself with 5 mins spare then check it out. cheers bud
Great conversation with Katie, and I would absolutely die (of happiness) if you had Trae Crowder or any of the Well Red Comedy guys on the podcast. Love them!

Some good things to ponder about in terms of politics, financial systems, and climate.
