On his second visit to the podcast, Frans discusses his latest book, Different: Gender Through the Eyes of a Primatologist, as well as one of my favorite books, Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape, which he co-authored with photographer Frans Lanting.
You also could have played Ape Man by the Kinks in this episode. One of my favorite tunes.if you listen to the lyrics, I think the character in that Kinks song is part bonobo 😉
Perhaps bonobos and other apes react more to other type of sensory stimuli, like smell, when it comes to sexual arousal. Somebody needs to invent the bonobo version of Chanel No. 5.
Speaking of which, tales of sexual encounters between Bigfoot and humans are rare, but they are definitely part of the lore. In fact, the idea of non-human beings kidnapping people from time to time for procreation has been with us for many centuries, and it is still part of modern mythology --Antonio Villas Boas and his quick rendezvous with a short blond humanoid who grunted like a dog during intercourse being just one example.
I guess Sex and not Math is the true universal language ;)
Speaking about instinct, I recently saw a dog eating grass, maybe for digestive issues. He seemed to know exactly what kind of grass to eat. I don't know if such a complex behavior has been learned from other dogs, or if it's all encoded in DNA. Either way, it amazes me how this amount of information passes from one generation to the other.
I know of a case in a german Zoo (Tierpark Hagenbeck), where they showed a male Orang Utan named Tuan Clips of Orang Urans having sex. He was raised by humans and didnt have sex with the females of his group. The Zoo Director called an Orang Utan Expert and he showed him the Clips, the Male was interested but it didnt work, he still had no sex with his females. This changed as they let another male in his group, now he has offsprings.
