Hi Chris, I’ve been binging the backlog. Dr. Conti is your second guest whose book I’ve bought today, the first being Harley Rustad. Thank you for publishing this conversation! It was quite an emotional experience to hear a working expert in the field echo my own qualms with trauma treatment and crisis intervention. We’re led to believe that the medical industry is our best (or only) avenue to heal trauma, but it often becomes an endless, traumatizing loop in and of itself. I quickly learned that the system functions more like a law enforcement agency than a safe haven for those struggling with their mental health. A traumatizing experience in an emergency room at 18 led me to delay seeking help for my addiction years later. I wish I could say my following adventures in treatment improved from there. Shame is indeed a powerful deterrent against the change this industry desperately needs. When the perpetrators are the professionals who hold the authority to dismiss such stigmatized casualties, it’s hard not to feel hopeless about it all. In conjunction with changing our community dynamics, practitioners like Dr. Conti will make a powerful impact. Thank you again, and apologies for the essay - this is why I usually stick to lurking :)
