“What’s Up, Doctopher?” is a free monthly newsletter. To gain access to bonus content including BROMAs, TOMAs, travel updates, AMAs, What Makes this Book Great?, the DJCPR series, and a monthly open thread where you can interact with the Tangentially Speaking community (this month’s is open to everyone, and we’re talking about whether there’s anything inherently degrading about sex work). Please consider becoming a paid subscriber for $5/month or $50/year (which is less than a buck a week!). If you’ve already subscribed, much obliged.
The spring winds are dying down and summer bugs are a-stirring. The seasons move with urgency in Crestone. They rush in and don’t stay long. At 8,000 feet, nature doesn’t have time to fuck around. When it rains, it’s a downpour. A light breeze is a warning of the snarling winds coming soon. When the summer sun is strong, it’ll peel the paint off your car. But all the harshness reveals a purity, scrubbing away whatever isn’t essential, durable and real. There’s comfort in being here amid all this unambiguous reality — especially in times like these, when reality seems to be an increasingly dubious, slippery, shadowy concept.
Lifeboat updates: We pulled the sewer lift pump out of the ground, dug a new trench through the lot we bought recently (shit flows best downhill, I’m told), put down a concrete slab, and are now in the process of building a mud room / sun room / bathroom addition over the place the pump used to be. I stepped away from the framing to write this little missive. As usual, we’re blessed to have friends drop by with skills and eagerness to lend a hand. This’ll give you a sense of the goings-on round here:
On Memorial Day, I put together the second DJCPR volume: a collection of songs about war. If you’re a paying subscriber, you should have received notice of that.
We’ll be heading off in Scarlett Jovannson next weekend, en route to this year’s Sex at Dawn/Budokon retreat. The slots for single men are all full, but there are a few spaces for women/couples. Drop us a line if you’re interested in joining us in Whitefish in a few days. Great food, lovely people, amazing location, sauna, cold plunge, sweet dogs, deep conversation, world-class movement teachers, lasting friendships. Come get your chakras aligned, your toxins flushed, and your shit together!
