Hey everyone -
Greetings from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Unless the plane crashes, I’ll be in Zanzibar in a few hours. For me, Zanzibar is up there with Kathmandu, Mandalay, and Timbuktu, in terms of how much exoticism the name conveys. It’s a place I never thought I’d see. Next week, the plan is to fly up to Arusha and spent 9 days in a Land Cruiser and 9 nights in a tent, wondering if the sound I just heard outside is a lion. Having spent a lot of time in tents in Alaska, I’m used to wondering if the sound outside is a bear. This’ll be similar, but different.
I just posted a new WMTBG? episode, which you can listen to here, if you’re a paying subscriber. It’s about a poem called “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry,” by Walt Whitman. It’s a truly magical piece of writing, where Whitman anticipates us looking back at him, imploring us to feel all the connections between us that overcome the limitations of time and death and imagination. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
In addition to the What Makes This Book Great? series, paying subscribers get access to bonus ROMAs (BROMAs), AMAs, travel essays, photos from the road, and all kinds of other goodies. If you opt for the one year subscription, it comes out to just over $4 per month. Here’s a button to make it easy.
I greatly appreciate your support.

Have fun, dude, I remember that bear prowling outside our tent next to the Kenai River. Are we lucky to be alive?
Don't worry, by 60 your flesh is too tough and chewy, so a lion would probably save you for last ;)
