Here’s some cool shit to enliven your Sunday (or whenever you look at this).
Certainly one of the best TV shows ever made, Deadwood announced it’s enigmatic charms immediately, in the opening credits. Note the overriding theme: beauty in the horrid. Almost every image contains both ends of the spectrum: elegance, balance, eroticism — as well as brutality, exploitation, despair. This balanced approach extends to every major character. If you stick with the show, you’ll find that even the most despicable, hateful characters have within them a wound that renders them very relatable.
The creator of the show, David Milch, talking about talking in the Old West.
A very modern version of a classic Blues standard.
I wrote about the Pirahã in both my books, because they are such a fascinating group of people, who seem to be a counter-example to so many assumptions about human nature and the built-in architecture of our brain. They avoid abstractions like past, future, words for color or direction. They insist on living in the here and now. This documentary offers many insights into a part of humanity that may not exist much longer.
Definitely one of the best series of all time.
Don’t Sleep There Are Snakes by Daniel Everett is a wonderful book about the Piraha. The audio books is awesome and it is read by the author.
