The issue with entities giving money to podcasts is one of a kind. AG1, for instance, that fucking supplement is a scam, and it's advertised on Joe's and Duncan's podcasts, and pretty much everywhere. I just can't stand someone lying to my face that way and then saying they stand for the regular people, for truth, for common sense. Joe and Duncan probably know AG1 is a lie, and they do it anyway and that speaks volumes
Love that 96 version of Sultans. Knopfler is such a cool dude, and he aged like a fine wine. It’s about as fun to watch him play his guitar as it is to listen. My favorite rendition has always been the (I think Melbourne) Alchemy tour from sometime in the 70s. That man is a master of musical energy!
My threshold for offense is pretty high, i'd ay. But ever since the first time i heard Cis gender, i was offended by it. It sounds like cyst. As if being a standard man or woman was a tumor on society. I've heard it mean sissy. So dumb. Fuck all that. If anyone calls me cis i will not stand for it.
There are many reasons I listen to your podcast Chris (and pay), but the commitment to honesty is a big one. To figure out what your principles are and then stand by them is admirable, especially in a world where deceit really has been normalised. That rant about adverts was fucking inspiring honestly.
Thanks for being a sane voice that seeks the truth and identifies the clear lies all around us. Love the ROMAs, they help me feel less alone in my perspective of the world.
That playout completely changed the way I feel about Sultans of Swing. A lifetime of only hearing the radio edit really ruined that song for me even though it always felt like there was something deeper there.
And 2. Comedian scene in US getting sucked by the politic/social evil mobs. I've watched Elephant Graveyard cast (fastfowarding some parts) and it's obvious to me - it's a part of the bigger trend splitting us up into leaders and followers. Social projects and programs are not longer relevant, It's only "who owns who"/"who roasts who" instead. Te facade became the building. Very interesting. What is unobvious and, maybe, positive - if the "lords" dont care about the future, why should we?
Yeah, there are two important parts in this emanation ;D 1. The hard to bear, but strong-bond relationships. I've been there. Many times. And I really appreciate your point, Chris. Sometimes you have to quit, although it's valuable and meaningful. There are deep psychological reasons you choose this partner and this partner is choosing you. And the karmic ones, ofc. It's usually your egotrip vs his/hers. It is obvious to this point - when and how you see, that this is too much?
I watched the whole video, and although it's satyrical tone feels too over the top to, I happen to agree with a lot of points it makes. Hell, it even agrees with you when you address how Rogan trying to present his podcast as "anti-establishment" is just a simulation, when his media exposure is now BIGGER than most traditional networks.
Comparing Joe with Marshall Applewhite may sound too extreme, but the irony is that, due to that level of exposure I just mentioned, there's a good chance Joe ended up being responsible for more deaths during the COVID pandemic, than all the Heaven Gate cultists who drank the Kool Aid.
Re. How the leftist rhetoric caused a lot of "antiwoke" cisgender males to embrace fascism, you reminded me of this comic:
Just watched the Elephant Graveyard video. I’ve posted here re:Joe before and didn’t expect to discuss Joe here again but here we are…
Bless Elephant Graveyard for his work. I stopped listening to Duncan a few years back when I was getting the feeling that what I loved about Duncan, like the warning he was giving Joe about being used by nefarious people, had been consumed by dark forces. It was sad to see my feelings validated and a bit of a shock at the level of which Duncan has sunk.
As much as I used to enjoy JRE with the lovable and harmless weirdos he created a space for, I easily gave it up when Joe lost his mind or his true self emerged around 2020. I never really had an affinity for Joe but Duncan, he seemed like a really thoughtful and beautiful person. It really is disheartening that he couldn’t stay golden. Money is a powerful drug. That can’t be the only reason… Can it?
Of course it can't. There are deeper motivation, causes, as usual. But money is a powerful amplifier. There were familly issues, insecurity issues, domination/submission issues, sexuall drive issues an so on, for thousands of years before the money came onto the scene. The EG is setting it out quite clearly. Comedian, trickster, Joker, has become an important figure now, not only beacause he (it's so often HE, not she) is making us laugh, but primarily, because he humiliates/"roasts" others (and sometimes - us! - so sweet). Trump does this and politicians in general are turning trolls. The society of spectacle is turning the society of trolling, imo. More desperate
One of the red flags with Duncan was his shilling for gambling companies. I have a friend who works with gambling addicts and I’ve studied a little Buddhism so when Buddha Duncan started promoting gambling in his pod there was a sense he was not the person I imagined he was after watching midnight gospel.
I am pretty darn curious about the Joe and Duncan story and when it took place.
Big props to Chris for creating a (IMHO) genuinely corporate and mainstream free space and connecting with truly unique individuals. Stay Golden Chris.
I'm not into the podcast world at all, TS is the only one I'm listening to and not for a long time. I also know Duncan from Midnight Gospel and I think it is officially brilliant. And lately I've listened to one TS episode from years ago with him and it was cool. That's all. Is this big tech guy an antichrist? I don't think so. He's out my interest by far. But this constant juggling with reverence and affiliation, this who-stands-with-whom, is sick, imo. It's just the new type of content. And who-is-against-who(m?) is the logical complement, probably even more attractive for the frustrated public. Diss him, roast him, crush him! Lots of negativity there. But. The close-up for the Duncan's eyes, which was to prove something (don't remember the exact words, generally - sucked into the cult/hyperreality/brainwashed)? Manipulative! The oldest trick. Make close-up on somebody's eyes and say he's crazy, sad, happy or wherever, and your audience will see it as the objective truth. Plus the eg video was too long, imo. I had to FF some filling parts. Anyway, it's pointing at some real, sad issues and giving a clever explanation to them. And the conclusion is also very satisfying for me. It's better to go swimming in the lake, than to take part and feed this silly mud-wrestling
It's sad to recognize how both Joe and Duncan were not impervious to RAS --the Rich Asshole Syndrome that Chris so pointedly described in Civilized to Death.
RAS is real. I remember the NY post giving aome rich guy in the Hamptons front page attention cause he was attacking Obama for being a socialist or whatever and I wondered, what did this guy contribute to society that he gets his voice amplified for the masses to digest. Turns out he came up with the Meow Mix commercial where the cats sing or some crap. 🤪
Hey Chris, you start this episode talking about how incompatibility within deep and growing love can be an issue or even make or break a relationship. Could you please expand on that? They say that opposites attract, and this has been my experience with my wife. We deeply love each other however, we are quite different in many ways. We are compatible in values, and maybe that is the most important compatibility of all - what do you think?
I think Chris's instincts as usual are spot on here, as well as the 2 recent videos.
I lived in Austin just before the "wealth" of the tech bro wave was starting to wash in, while everyone was still giddy with naive Obama optimism, listening to "stomp stomp clap clap" Millennial bands, and before smartphones were ubiquitous.
In addition to Rogan and Musk arriving there (for taxes not culture), many of the old great music venues shut down or moved to make way for the high rise condos. Some Austinites now call it Aust Angeles for how vapid it has become. The famous slacker outsider ethos of Linklater, Daniel Johnston, and Willie Nelson... what made Austin special left around the same time it's beloved iconic homeless cross dresser Leslie Cochran was gang jumped and beaten to death by a bunch of frat bros.
The Comedy Mothership is now where the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz theatre used to be, and was a far more affordable and communal experience then, even while watching a movie in darkness.
As far as what Trump is doing with the 4th wall and lack thereof... it's "Kayfabe". I think Blindboy Boatclub of the Irish hiphop duo The Rubberbandits captures it perfectly on the Novara podcast, where he likens it to American Professional Wrestling, a theatrical genre Trump is familiar with. https://youtu.be/NjmXzFQl4xI?si=bsngOn7n1g1_6dHT&t=342
And the Democratic Party's hollow impotent offerings of tinkering around the edges of Social Justice, in place of candidates or action that actually help working people, has rarely been summed up better than by The Onion in this post they made 8 years ago.

I miss the Shrimp Parade podcasts. It was a simpler time.
I agree about the worst pain being some interpersonal romantic finger trap... Tough. Cheers Chris thanks for the pod

Your bit fucking-off the new age vocab words everyone is sick of was great😂
what made you change your mind about talking about Rogan and Trussell?
I'm only talking about them a little. As you know, I'm keeping a lot to myself.
That playout completely changed the way I feel about Sultans of Swing. A lifetime of only hearing the radio edit really ruined that song for me even though it always felt like there was something deeper there.

Such a development will prove those "tough" men are in fact as weak and vulnerable as the "triggered" leftists they despise. Again, how ironic...

“Money is a powerful amplifier”. Nicely said.

This.
